NACB Responds to Risks of Cannabis-Infused Products with New National Standards

NEW YORK, NY (September 25, 2019) – Popularity of cannabis-infused products is skyrocketing in the U.S., but many consumers are not aware of their heightened risk for stronger, longer and delayed reactions when using these products. The NACB, in partnership with its members Rebel Coast and Therapy Tonics, are responding with new National Standards to address issues with cannabis-infused products involving production and process safety controls and recommended storage. The standards will be for cannabis-infused products in the U.S. and represent the NACB’s commitment to shaping cannabis into a safe, responsible and ethical industry. The NACB has already adopted National Standards for Packaging and Labeling, Lab Testing and Advertising.

NACB Standards are designed to protect consumers and demonstrate to regulators and the public that NACB members operate at the highest levels of ethics and responsibility, especially when it comes to the safety and quality of their products. To create each set of standards, the NACB takes input from its members along with government and subject matter experts, in addition to referring to other highly regulated industries. Once drafted and approved by members, the NACB receives feedback that is discussed and considered. After that, the Standard may be revised and finally voted on and adopted by NACB members.

Director of Legal and Strategic Initiatives, Tom Nolasco, heads up the NACB’s National Standards initiatives.Previously co-chair of the Dickinson Wright National Cannabis Group, Tom is a 20-year litigator who entered the cannabis industry six years ago through partnership dispute cases. He’s worked with municipal, state and federal legislators, including Representative Ed Perlmutter’s team on the SAFE Act. Tomis recognized nationally as an expert on medical and recreational cannabis laws.He was recently interviewed by MarketWatch on the Senate Banking hearing on the SAFE Act and KSRO in Sonoma County, CA regarding the importance of National Standards.

Additional NACB Standards adopted and in progress include:

·      Packaging & Labeling

·      Advertising

The NACB’s Standards for Cannabis-Infused Products is expected to be adopted in the first half of 2020. Compliance with these Standards is required for ongoing membership in the NACB. More information about the NACB and an application for membership are available at www.NACB.com.
